Learn about New Jersey’s Elusive Hunter: The Bobcat with Conserve Wildlife Foundation Executive Director David Wheeler. By the 1960’s, bobcats were virtually extinct in New Jersey due to habitat loss and hunting. Restoration projects in the late 70’s and early 80’s led to the reintroduction of 24 bobcats back into the state, with the hope of monitoring the population over the years as it established a breeding and stable population. Today, they are New Jersey’s only remaining wild cat and listed as one of New Jersey’s endangered species.
