The peregrine falcon, also known as the duck hawk, is the largest falcon in New Jersey, and the world’s fastest animal, capable of flying at speeds over 200 miles an hour. Just a few decades ago, peregrine falcons disappeared east of the Mississippi River — yet today we can celebrate 28 active falcon nests in New Jersey. For the world’s fastest animal to again thrive in New Jersey speaks both to the peregrine falcon’s inspiring resiliency and to the hard work and visionary leadership of those who worked for their successful comeback. This program gives the public a glimpse into the life of the peregrine falcon, the adaptations that make him unique, and how he overcame adversity in the Garden State. CWF Biologist Larissa Smith discusses the bats of New Jersey. Bats suffer from a bad reputation among those who do not know them. In fact, as you will learn in this talk, they are beneficial to humans and fascinating creatures. NJ bat populations have been on the decline, however, and CWF is working with researchers to study their causes – and to look for solutions. Find out what CWF is doing to help bats in the state and what you can do yourself.

The New Jersey premiere of Birds of May, by filmmaker Jared Flesher, tells the story of the federally threatened rufa red knot and its annual visit to the Delaware Bay.

Following the movie, stay for a Q&A with the director, a presentation by shorebird biologist Larry Niles and Conserve Wildlife Foundation’s David Wheeler and Stephanie Feigin, wildlife art by James Fiorentino, and migration-themed poetry readings by the Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Program, featuring Cynthia Arrieu-King and Catherine Doty. The event is part of “Because We Come from Everything: Poetry and Migration,” a series organized by the newly formed National Poetry Coalition. Ice cream and sorbet courtesy of the bent spoon.
