The Sandpiper
Hi! I'm Sandy! I’m an upland sandpiper! I live in New Jersey. I am a black,
brown, and white bird with a long neck and tail. I have a round head with large black
eyes and quite a short bill for a Sandpiper. Native grasslands are where my kind live, or
prefer to. We require taller grass for nesting. During breeding season, the other Upland
Sandpipers often perch on fence posts or utility poles and then they forage by walking
quickly through the grass with jerky movements picking up items from the ground or
from low vegetation. I eat mostly insects, but sometimes waste grains and other seeds,
but I have a big problem...
I am a threatened animal! Humans are getting rid of my habitat! They are building
HUGE nests made out of wood everywhere, and factories poison the water I drink! If I
cant live in my habitat anymore, I wont be able to hide my nest very well! That also
means new predators will be hunting me and eating my eggs!
You can help me by setting aside land for my kind. It would help a lot! Also,
don’t explore our habitat! The grass you walk on gets flat leaving our nests in the clear.
Hungry predators find our eggs a yummy snack. Spread the word! We need help!
