Piping Plover

Hi, I’m Pico the piping plover! I’m small sand-colored shorebird. I live the majority of my life span on open sandy breaches or rocky shores, often in high, dry sections away from water.

I just adore the Atlantic Coast of the U.S. and Canada. I enjoy being on the ocean, or bay beaches, and on the Great Lakes shores. Do you want to know what I love to eat? I love insects, marine worms, and crustaceans! They are delectable!!! My lovely wife, Rachel, introduced me to many different crunchy insects (she’s a great cook!). I met her in late March last year. “Honey! It’s time for you to dig our nest for the year!” We’ll I’ve got to go! It will take me at least a day to dig it… When I’m done, Rachel will evaluate my work, and if it’s good, she will decorate it with shells and debris to camouflage it. Oh, I forgot to tell you. I’m endangered in ten states! Ten! Isn’t that a lot? I just heard from my friend about three days ago that a large population has disappeared in Ontario, Canada. That’s where my uncle lives! Oh, no! But, some nice groups help my friends and me by putting up electronic fences so that people won’t ruin my beach house!

So, please protect me! Even though I am so small and you are huge, please help me! I am also a part of this big world. Also, don’t litter because a small bottle cap might be tiny to you, but it is huge to me! Rachel is calling me so I’ve got to go! Talk to you later! Bye!
