How (Horseshoe) Crabs Saved Us from Covid
Time & Place
7:30pm
Zoom
Hosted by the Bergen County Audubon Society.
Join naturalist and author David Wheeler for the extraordinary tale of the horseshoe crab, an ancient animal whose unique blood is the only substance that can be used to test all of our vaccines for safety – including the vaccines for COVID-19! Even beyond the COVID connection, the horseshoe crab has a fascinating story, from swimming the seas long before the dinosaurs to its role as centerpiece for a globally significant shorebird migration right here in New Jersey. Yet the future of the horseshoe crab is far from guaranteed, with its population having drastically declined and its coastal life cycle particularly vulnerable to the perils of climate change.
