Conservationist and author David Wheeler will present “Wild New Jersey: Nature Adventures in the Garden State” at the East Brunswick Public Library. The program is free and open to the public. Children 8 and older are welcome.

Wheeler, executive director of the nonprofit Conserve Wildlife Foundation (CWF) of New Jersey, will lead the audience on a journey through the diverse wildlife, nature destinations and exciting outdoor activities found in New Jersey. As a small region geographically, the state’s biodiversity rivals that of anywhere in the country.

“From bald eagles and bobcats to diamondback terrapins and bottlenose dolphins, wildlife abounds in New Jersey,” Wheeler says.

Wheeler is the author of the 2011 book, “Wild New Jersey: Nature Adventures in the Garden State,” and teachs environmental communications at Rutgers. He also is on the board of the Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission.

His talk is part of the Option Green lecture series presented by the Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission in partnership with the library. Friends EBEC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to conservation and environmental education. Membership is free and open to all township residents.

Bats have a reputation for being spooky or dangerous – but they are actually some of the most beneficial animals for people! They keep mosquitoes in check, preventing itchy bites, and are estimated to be worth up to $53 billion a year in reduced crop damage and pesticide use in the United States. Find out what bats call New Jersey home, how bats can be beneficial to humans, and explore common myths and misconceptions about bats. Learn about current threats to bats, and what we can do to help combat them. We'll demonstrate how to build a bat house, and have three completed houses, and for the adventurous, one kit you can build yourself - each available for a $50 donation.
